Okay, so yesterday I was craving something sweet, but I also wanted it to be kinda easy, you know? I stumbled upon this recipe for a chocolate cherry dump cake and thought, “Why not?” I mean, I love chocolate, I love cherries, and I really love my crock pot. It’s like, the ultimate set-it-and-forget-it machine.
First, I grabbed a can of cherry pie filling. I think it was the 21-ounce can, the regular-sized one. I dumped that right into the bottom of my crock pot. No need to grease it or anything, just straight in.
Then, I opened up a box of chocolate cake mix. Any brand will do, I just used what I had in the pantry. I sprinkled the dry cake mix evenly over the top of the cherry filling. Don’t mix it! Just let it sit on top like a fluffy, chocolatey blanket.

Next up, the butter. I used one stick of butter, which is half a cup, and I sliced it into thin pats. I arranged those butter pats all over the top of the cake mix, trying to cover as much surface area as possible. Again, no mixing!
I put the lid on my crock pot, set it to low, and walked away. Seriously, that’s it! I let it cook for about 4 hours. You could probably do it on high for less time, but I wasn’t in a rush.
- Cherry pie filling (one can)
- Chocolate cake mix (one box)
- Butter (one stick, sliced)
The Waiting Game (and the Result!)
The hardest part was the waiting! My kitchen started to smell amazing, like warm chocolate and sweet cherries. After four hours, I peeked inside. The cake was all bubbly and cooked through, and the cherries were peeking out from underneath.
I let it cool for a little bit before scooping some out. It was so good! The cake was moist and chocolatey, the cherries were warm and gooey, and the butter made the top all crispy and delicious. I served it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and it was pure heaven.
Honestly, this is probably the easiest dessert I’ve ever made. And it’s definitely a crowd-pleaser. If you’re looking for a simple, delicious treat, you gotta try this chocolate cherry dump cake!
