Well, let me tell ya, when it comes to them fruits and vegetables, startin’ with the letter “R”, there’s a whole bunch, more than you can shake a stick at. Some are good for ya, some just taste good, and some, well, they ain’t worth a hill of beans, if you ask me.
First off, let’s talk about them radishes. Them little red things, they’re right spicy, like a firecracker in your mouth. My old man, he used to grow ’em in the garden, and we’d eat ‘em with a bit of salt. Crunch, crunch, crunch, they went. Some folks say they put a zing in your salad, but I just think they’re kinda hot. And some of them ain’t even red, they’re white and long like carrots, go figure. They got all sorts of fancy names too, like Cherry somethin’ and Scarlet Globe. Sounds like somethin’ you’d find in a fancy lady’s hat, not somethin’ you’d eat.
Then there’s that rhubarb stuff. Now that’s a funny one. Folks say it’s a vegetable, but it sure tastes like a fruit when you put enough sugar in it. Makes a mighty fine pie, I tell ya. Tangy and sweet, just the way I like it. My grandma used to make rhubarb pie every spring, and the whole house would smell like sunshine and sugar. But don’t you go eatin’ the leaves, though, they’ll make you sick as a dog. Only the stems, mind you.

And speaking of fruits, there’s this red skin dragon fruit thing. Never seen one in my life, but I heard tell it’s a fruit, and starts with an R. Sounds mighty fancy, somethin’ you’d find in a big city market, not down here in the country. Probably tastes like nothin’ much, all them fancy fruits usually don’t.
- Radishes: Spicy little things, good for a crunch.
- Rhubarb: Makes a good pie, but don’t eat the leaves!
- Red Skin Dragon Fruit: Never seen it, but I heard it is a fruit that starts with R.
Now, some folks get all confused about what’s a fruit and what’s a vegetable. Take tomatoes, for example. Some folks say they’re vegetables, but I say they’re fruits. They grow on a vine, and they got seeds inside. Same goes for cucumbers and peppers. But who am I to say, right? I just eat ‘em, I don’t study ‘em.
And there’s all sorts of other stuff too, like raspberries, those little red berries that grow on bushes. Used to pick ‘em when I was a kid, and my fingers would be all stained red. Sweet as can be, though. But they ain’t a vegetable.
Then you got your radicchio, which they tell me is one of them leafy green things. Some kind of fancy lettuce, I reckon. Looks kinda purplish to me, and tastes a bit bitter, not my cup of tea. Give me a good old head of iceberg lettuce any day.
There’s lots more, I’m sure, like raisins, those dried up grapes, but them ain’t really fruits no more, are they? They’re just… raisins. And rose hips? Heard they make good tea, but never tried it myself. Too busy drinkin’ my coffee, I guess.
So, there you have it, a whole bunch of fruits and vegetables, and some things that are kinda in between, all startin’ with that letter “R.” Makes your head spin, don’t it? But at the end of the day, it don’t much matter what you call ’em, as long as they taste good and fill your belly. And that’s all that matters to an old woman like me.
So, to sum it up, for fruits or vegetables that start with r, we got radishes, rhubarb, red skin dragon fruit, and radicchio. And maybe a few others I forgot. But that’s enough to keep you busy for a while, ain’t it?
Remember, eat your fruits and vegetables, even if they’re spicy or bitter or purple, they’re good for ya, or so they say. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make myself a cup of coffee and maybe a slice of rhubarb pie, if I can find some rhubarb. And if I can’t find that, maybe I’ll just eat some of them radishes, just to spice things up a bit.

And remember to check out other letters too, like for apples, you got many different types, and colors too. Same goes for strawberries, blueberries and even things like potatoes. There is a whole world of good eatin’ out there, you just gotta know where to look. And don’t forget about your greens, like spinach and lettuce. They might not be as exciting as them fruits, but they’re good for ya. So, eat up and be healthy!
