Okay, here’s my blog post about making an apple cider donut cake using a box mix, written from my personal experience:
So, I’ve been seeing these apple cider donut cakes all over my Pinterest feed, and they looked amazing. But, honestly, I’m not the best baker from scratch. I mean, I can follow a recipe, but sometimes things just…go wrong. So I thought, “Why not try making it easier on myself?” That’s where the boxed cake mix comes in!
I grabbed a box of spice cake mix – figured that would be the closest flavor profile. You could probably use a yellow cake mix too, but I wanted those extra spices in there. This is key, it saves us time. I was pumped, and it made this a total weekday project instead of a weekend ordeal.

Getting Started
First things first, I preheated my oven to 350°F (175°C). Gotta have that ready to go! Then, I greased and floured a bundt pan. Don’t skip this step, or your cake will stick and it’ll be a disaster. I’ve learned that the hard way, more than once, sadly.
Mixing it Up
Okay, here’s where the magic happens. I dumped the cake mix into a big bowl. Then, instead of following the box instructions for liquids, I used apple cider! I replaced however much liquid it asked with about one and a quater cup of apple cider. Also dumped about a teaspoon of cinnamon, and a quarter teaspoon of nutmeg, I like the extra spices and think it’s necessary.
I also added the eggs and oil that the box called for. Don’t forget those!
I mixed it all up with my trusty hand mixer until it was just combined. Don’t overmix it, or the cake can get tough. Nobody wants a tough cake.
Baking Time
I poured the batter into my prepared bundt pan and popped it into the oven. Now, the box will give you a baking time, but it’s gonna be a little different because we’re using a bundt pan and different kind of liquids. Mine took about 40-45 minutes. I started checking it around 35 minutes, just to be safe.

Insert a toothpick in the center.

If it comes out clean you are good to go!
Once it was done, I let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before flipping it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
The Finishing Touch
While the cake was cooling, I made a super simple glaze. Just powdered sugar and more apple cider! You can add a little cinnamon to this too, if you’re feeling fancy. I whisked it together until it was smooth and drizzled it all over the cooled cake.
And that’s it! Seriously, it was so much easier than I expected, and it tasted amazing. Like, bakery-quality good. The apple cider flavor really comes through, and the spice cake mix gives it that perfect warm, cozy vibe. It’s the perfect fall treat, and I’m definitely making this again. Maybe with a caramel drizzle next time…ooh, the possibilities!
